Welcome to Newcastle, the most northerly university city in England! Newcastle is situated in the north-east of England on the River Tyne, and has a population of almost 300,000. The city is renowned for the Great North Run, Newcastle Brown Ale and the local Geordie accent!
GETTING TO NEWCASTLE
Newcastle Airport (NCL) is the largest airport in the north-east of England and is only 6 miles north of the city centre. There are daily domestic, European and some international flights. There is a regular bus and metro service available from the airport into the city centre, or you can call one of the local taxi companies. If you are travelling by train or bus, Newcastle Central Station, and both Haymarket and Eldon Square bus stations are located in the heart of the city.
GETTING AROUND NEWCASTLE
Public transport in Newcastle is excellent. There are extensive local bus and train services operating within the city, and an underground metro network that is very popular. All public transport options are inexpensive, however, many students walk or cycle.

THINGS TO DO IN NEWCASTLE
There is plenty to see and do in Newcastle. Spend a few hours at The Discovery Museum or take in a show at the Theatre Royal. If you are a sports fan, there is 'Premier League football' at St James' Park, rugby at Kingston Park, and horse racing at the Newcastle Racecourse. There are several cinemas, theatres and concert venues including the O2 Academy and the Metro Radio Arena. If you fancy going for a stroll, there are plenty of great walks along the River Tyne or in one the city's many parks.
SHOPPING IN NEWCASTLE
Newcastle is well-known for great shopping. The main shopping areas in the city centre are located on Market Street, Hood Street and High Bridge. The Eldon Square shopping complex is one of the largest shopping malls in the UK, and another option is The Gateshead Metro Centre, (a 10-minute bus journey), which is the largest indoor shopping complex in Europe.
