Welcome to Manchester, home of Manchester United! Manchester is situated in the north-west of England, and has a population of more than 500,000, making it the third largest city in England. The city is famous for its culture, sports and music, and with its large student population, it is a perfect place to study abroad.
GETTING TO MANCHESTER
Manchester Airport (MAN) is only 8 miles south of the city centre and there are daily domestic and international flights. There is a regular bus service from the airport into the city centre, or you can call one of the local taxi companies. If you are travelling by bus or train, Central Bus Station and both Picadilly and Victoria train stations are located in the city centre.
GETTING AROUND MANCHESTER
Public transport in Manchester is excellent. There are extensive bus, train and tram services operating within the city and surrounding suburbs. Manchester also has the Metroshuttle service, which is a free city centre bus service that operates between the main railway stations, car parks, bus stations and Metrolink tram stops. All public transport options are inexpensive, however, many students walk or cycle.

THINGS TO DO IN MANCHESTER
Manchester has a number of attractions to keep you busy. Spend a few hours in the Imperial War Museum, or the Manchester Art Gallery, visit the Chinese Art Centre, or enjoy an opera at the Opera House. If you are a sports fan there is 'Premier League football' at Old Trafford and The City of Manchester Stadium, or cycling at the Manchester Veledrome. For the more energetic, enjoy a run or a cycle through the streets and parks of the city, or out to the Salford Quays.
SHOPPING IN MANCHESTER
Manchester is well-known for great shopping. The main shopping area in the city centre is located on Deansgate and the surrounding streets. Shopping malls include the Arcades Shopping Centre and the Manchester Arndale. Another option is The Trafford Centre (a 15-minute bus journey), which offers hundreds of shops and other amenities. Manchester also has a number of interesting and fun local street markets.

Manchester is home to several universities and colleges. The main universities are the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University.
