Welcome to Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland with a population of more than 700,000. Glasgow is situated in the west of Scotland on the River Clyde, is famous for ship building and is home to both Rangers and Celtic football clubs.
HOW TO GET TO GLASGOW
Glasgow airport (GLA) is the largest airport in Scotland and is only 7 miles west of the city centre. There are daily domestic and international flights to and from the airport. There is a bus service available from the airport into the city centre or you can call one of the local taxi companies. If you are arriving by bus or train, Buchanan Bus Station and both Central and Queens Street Train Stations are all located in the heart of the city. (TIP: Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and Prestwick Airport (PIK) are both only 45 minutes from Glasgow by bus or train.)
GETTING AROUND GLASGOW
Public transport in Glasgow is excellent with both bus and train services. Glasgow also has an underground that is very popular. All public transport options are inexpensive, however, many students walk or cycle.
STAYING IN GLASGOW
For short term accommodation use one of the city's quality hostels. We recommend the excellent SYHA hostel and the Glasgow Euro Hostel where you will receive a warm welcome and find a friendly atmosphere. EATING OUT IN GLASGOW
Glasgow has a fantastic choice of takeaways and restaurants. We recommend the La Rotunda Italian restaurant in the West End of the city and you will also find one of our favourites, Athena Greek Taverna, which offers great quality and a friendly atmosphere.
GOING OUT IN GLASGOW
Glasgow is renowned for its nightlife and is a great student venue. We highly recommend The Ark pub in the city centre, The Hall pub, located at Charing Cross and Walkabout which is an Australian themed bar.
THINGS TO DO IN GLASGOW
There is plenty to see and do in Glasgow. A great day out can be spent at The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. (TIP: free entry). If you are a sports fan, there is 'SPL football' at Parkhead, rugby at Scotstoun and ice hockey at the Braehead Arena. There are several cinemas, theatres and concert venues including the O2 Academy and the SECC. If you fancy going for a stroll, there are plenty of great walks along the River Clyde or in one the city's many parks.
SHOPPING IN GLASGOW
Glasgow is well-known for great shopping. The main shopping areas are located on Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street and Buchanan Street. Shopping malls include Buchanan Galleries and The St Enoch Centre. Another option is The Braehead Shopping Centre (a 15-minute bus journey) which also offers fun activities such as rock climbing, snow boarding and ice skating.
