Welcome to Aberdeen, the most northerly university city in the UK. It is Scotland's third largest city with a population of 220,000, and is the European centre for the Oil and Gas Industry. Aberdeen is known as the Granite City.
HOW TO GET TO ABERDEEN
Aberdeen Airport (ABZ) is only 6 miles north of the city centre with daily domestic and European flights to and from the airport. There is a bus service available from the airport into the city centre, or you can call one of the local taxi companies. We recommend ComCab Aberdeen. If you prefer to travel by bus or train, Aberdeen's bus station and train station are located close to Union Street in the city centre.
GETTING AROUND ABERDEEN
A bus service is the only form of public transport (Stagecoach and First), but many students walk or cycle. If you have luggage, shopping or returning home late, we recommend calling a taxi.
STAYING IN ABERDEEN
For short term accommodation use the excellent SYHA hostel. (TIP: demand on weeknights can be high, so book ahead.) For longer term student accommodation, check out our dedicated section for student accommodation in Aberdeen.
EATING OUT IN ABERDEEN
Aberdeen has plenty of restaurants and takeaways. For traditional Indian food we recommend the award-winning Cinnamon restaurant on Union Street, and Manzil on King Street. For Italian cuisine, we love La Lombarda on King Street, and you need to try one of our favourites, Christos Greek Taverna. For more restaurants and takeaways in Aberdeen click here.
GOING OUT IN ABERDEEN
Aberdeen has a great nightlife with loads of bars and nightclubs. Students are sure to enjoy Bobbin, Triple Kirks, Slains Castle or The Monkey House. (TIP: all venues are great for live sport.) Club Snafu on Union Street is a well-known music venue, or party until late at The Priory.
THINGS TO DO IN ABERDEEN
There is plenty to see and do in Aberdeen. We recommend visiting the Aberdeen Art Gallery, the Maritime Museum and His Majesty's Theatre. For the more energetic there are golf courses, sports clubs and an ice rink. Football fans can enjoy watching 'live SPL football' at Pittodrie, and for movie-lovers, Aberdeen boasts several cinemas.
SHOPPING IN ABERDEEN
Aberdeen has a few shopping malls such as Union Square and The Trinity Centre, where you will find all of the big names. There are smaller independent shops on Union Street together with a number of hairdressers, nail bars and beauty salons.
