Welcome to Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, which was crowned World Design Capital of 2012! Helsinki is located on the Gulf of Finland in the south of the country, and with a population of over 600,000, it is the largest city in Finland. Helsinki is Finland's major political and economical centre, and contributes significantly to the overall Scandinavian economy.

GETTING TO HELSINKI
Helsinki Airport (HEL) is situated 9 miles north of the city centre with daily european and 
international flights. There are regular bus and train services linking the airport to the city centre, or you can call one of the local taxi companies. If you are travelling to Helsinki by train, Helsinki Central Station is located in the heart of the city. Helsinki also enjoys sea connections with other European countries.

GETTING AROUND HELSINKI
Helsinki has an excellent public transport system which consists of a metro, a tramway system, a commuter rail network, buses and ferry services. Both the tramway and metro operate within the city centre, while the bus and train services operate within the city centre and the local suburbs. Public transport is clean, efficient and reliable, and tickets are reasonably priced. The city also operates 2 ferry lines.

THINGS TO DO IN HELSINKI
Helsinki is the most visited city in Finland and has plenty to see and do. Spend a day at the Natural History Museum of Helsinki or the National Museum, visit the Maritime Museum of Finland, or enjoy an opera at the Alexander Theatre. If you are a sports fan, Helsinki is home to a number of sports and sporting events including, football, handball, ice hockey and several winter sports. For the more energetic, during the summer, enjoy a run or a cycle in the city's parks and gardens, including the Meilahti Arboretum, and in the winter, why not try 'Nordic Skiing'! We recommend a day out to the Linnanmäki amusement park.

SHOPPING IN HELSINKI
Helsinki offers shoppers an excellent and diverse shopping experience. The main shopping streets include Mannerheimintie, Aleksanterinkatu, Korkeavuorenkatu and Fredrikinkatu. You will find a variety of high street chains and numerous department stores including, Stockmann and Sokos. For Finnish outlets, visit the Esplanade, or if you prefer, the city offers a number of shopping malls including, Galleria Esplanad and the Itis Shopping Centre. Helsinki is also home to a number of fun street markets including Hakaniemi Market Square
